ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Father Gabriel Richard Athletics brought home three first-place finishes over the weekend, with Boys Cross Country winning the Bret Clements Bath Invitational, Boys Soccer claiming the Airport Soccer Invite and Girls Volleyball taking first at the Whitmore Lake Invite. Cross Country The FGR Boys and Girls Cross Country teams both competed in the Bret Clements Bath Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 12). The Boys squad finished first, winning the invitational with 30 points, which Coach Mackey believes to be a school record for the lowest team score at an invitational. FGR also earned 10 of the 35 medals awarded at the meet. Wally Kubert ’30, Owen Kraft ’29, John Murray ’29 and David Bingham ’28 also put together a strong race as a pack. The two pairs finished within four seconds of each other, and all four crossed the line within 20 seconds. Murray dropped 93 seconds from his previous best, while Bingham improved his personal record by more than a minute. Kraft cut 42 seconds from his previous best, and Kubert improved by 33 seconds. Up next for both teams is the 58th Annual Holly-Duane Raffin Festival of Races at Springfield Oaks County Park on Saturday (Sept. 19) beginning at 11 am. Girls Field Hockey Girls Field Hockey picked up a pair of wins over the past week to move its record to 5-1 on the season. The first came on Tuesday (Sept. 8) with a 3-0 home victory over Ann Arbor Greenhills. The Irish followed with a 3-2 road victory over Farmington Hills Mercy. Tonight (Sept. 14), the team will head back on the road to face Pinckney High School at 7 pm. The Irish will play their next game in one week (Sept. 21) at Bloomfield Hills Marian with a 4:30 pm start time. Equestrian In its first meet of the season on Sunday (Sept. 13), Equestrian swept the competition, earning the highest point total of the day. Team captain Alfonso Ciarelli ’27 led the way with first-place finishes in two classes. The Irish also closed out the day with a first-place finish in the relay race, with team captain Magdalena Eggleston ’27, Augustine Hansen ’28, Ella Cergnal ’30 and Ignatius Hansen ’30 among the group. The team is scheduled to compete again next Sunday (Sept. 20). Football Scoring at least 50 points in each of its first three games this season, Varsity Football continued to display its high-scoring offense along with a stifling defense in a 56-6 win over Detroit University Prep Art & Design. FGR scored 50 of its 56 points in the first half, taking a 50-0 lead into the break. Killian Miller ’27 led the Irish in rushing with 59 yards on eight carries and punched in a pair of touchdowns. Ian Everts ’27 added 32 yards on three carries and found the end zone once. Charlie Britnell ’30 completed 9-of-13 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Tanari ’27 caught two passes for 59 yards, while Miller hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass. Sean Flanagan ’28 recorded FGR’s other receiving touchdown, finishing with two catches for six yards. Defensively, the Irish forced five turnovers. Tommy Fredricks ’28 forced two fumbles, while Samuel Cashman ’28 and Adam Klinkhammer ’27 each recorded a fumble recovery. FGR also picked off three passes, with interceptions from Klinkhammer, Ryle Mong ’27 and Miller. This week, Football will hit the road for a matchup against Jackson Lumen Christi on Friday (Sept. 18). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm. Girls Golf Girls Golf posted consecutive wins on back-to-back days, first earning a 196-201 road victory over Farmington Hills Mercy on Wednesday (Sept. 9). Then, on Thursday (Sept. 10), FGR defeated Jackson Lumen Christi, 206-267, to remain undefeated on the season. Up next, Girls Golf will host Dearborn Divine Child on Thursday (Sept. 17) at Huron Hills before facing Divine Child again on the road Monday (Sept. 21) at Dearborn Country Club. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm. Boys Soccer Over the last week, Boys Soccer went 4-0-1, outscoring opponents 21-6. Seven players contributed to the 21 goals: Michael Wasco ’29, Thomas Baldante ’29, Stevie Shibata ’29, Payson Bryant, Andrew Kojiro ’28, Frank Koss ’27 and Alfonso Ciarelli ’27. During the five-game stretch, goalkeeper Ignatius Hansen ’30 recorded two clean sheets. The big week for the Irish started with a 6-1 road victory over Ypsilanti Arbor Prep on Tuesday (Sept. 8). On Thursday (Sept. 10), the Irish shut out Jackson Lumen Christi, 5-0, to earn their second road win of the week. On Saturday (Sept. 12), Boys Soccer traveled to Carleton for the Airport Soccer Invite. With victories over Pinckney (4-3) and Westland Universal Learning Academy (4-0), along with a 2-2 draw against Dundee, FGR finished 2-0-1 and won the Airport Soccer Invite. Up next, Boys Soccer has a three-game week beginning with an away match today (Sept. 14) against the East Michigan Panthers at Manly Bennett Park in Whitmore Lake. The match is scheduled for 5 pm. The Irish will return home tomorrow (Sept. 15) to face Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett at 5:30 pm before traveling to Allen Park to face Cabrini on Thursday (Sept. 17) at 5:30 pm. Girls Swim and Dive On Thursday (Sept. 10), Girls Swim and Dive defeated Milan High School, 106-73. Elizabeth O’Neil ’29, Lucy Tribble ’29 and Isabelle Gatza ’27 led the Irish with 12 points apiece. The team will compete in the Tiger Invite on Saturday (Sept. 19) beginning at noon. Boys Tennis FGR fell to De La Salle in Warren on Tuesday (Sept. 8). On Thursday (Sept. 10), Boys Tennis earned its first win of the season, defeating Jackson Lumen Christi, 6-2. Against Lumen Christi, Jimmy Heegan ’28 earned a key victory at No. 2 singles. Andrew Stout ’29 filled in at No. 3 singles and also picked up a win for the Irish. Tennis has three matches in the upcoming week, beginning with Riverview Gabriel Richard tomorrow (Sept. 15) at Huron Valley Tennis Club at 4 pm. On Wednesday (Sept. 16), FGR will travel to face Brooklyn Columbia Central in a makeup match beginning at 4 pm. The Irish will then travel to Dearborn to face Divine Child on Thursday (Sept. 17) at 4 pm. Girls Volleyball Girls Volleyball dropped two road matches, first falling to Jackson Lumen Christi on Tuesday (Sept. 8) in three sets (20-25, 25-27, 21-25). The Irish then took Dearborn Divine Child to five sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 13-25, 12-15), ultimately falling short on Thursday (Sept. 10). On Saturday (Sept. 12), the Irish got back on track at the Whitmore Lake Invite, where FGR took home first place after going 5-0 in the tournament. The team never allowed more than 19 points in a set and defeated Hudson (25-17, 25-7) in the final to claim another tournament title. In the tournament, Mia Keefer ’30 led FGR offensively with 34 kills and added seven blocks. Mary Lynn Hendershot ’29 recorded 33 kills, 24 digs, five aces and five blocks. Alison Oleszkowicz ’30 contributed 22 kills, 23 digs and eight aces, while Janie Osness ’30 dished out 96 assists to go along with 16 digs and six aces. Volleyball heads into another week of competition with a 14-3-1 record. Tomorrow (Sept. 15), the Irish will host Toledo Central Catholic High School at 6 pm. On Thursday (Sept. 17), FGR will travel to Warren to face Regina High School at 6:30 pm.
