SEP 09, 2019 (7:00pm) – CHELSEA
SUMMARY – The Irish (D2W Conference 1-1-1, Overall 2-3-1) made their first ever visit to Chelsea to face the Bulldogs in a D2W conference game. FGR were coming off a 2-3 loss to Mercy while Chelsea got a 1-0 win over East Grand Rapids.
Shortly after the starting whistle, it was clear this was going to be played at a frantic pace as each side was looking for the long pass and break-away attacks. The Irish struck first twelve minutes into the game on a long hit from Molly O’Leary (sr) that Olivia Barone (sr) redirected to forward Sarah Whittaker (sr) who tapped it over the goal line. Chelsea returned the favor seven minutes later when they were able to convert on a corner play and goal by Grace Lane. FGR didn’t sit back, though, as about two minutes later, the Irish converted on their own corner play with a beautiful passing display from Jane Falahee (sr) to Maddie Korte (jr) to Sarah Whittaker who scored for her second time. Neither team was able to add anything in the final minutes of the first half so FGR carried their 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, the action continued without let up. The ball was moving all over at high speed but neither side could get a quality opportunity to add to their totals. Finally with eight minutes left in the half, Chelsea was able to make good on one of their fast breaks with a goal by Madison Vogel to tie the game at 2-2. The Bulldogs defense bent but they never broke in the final thirty minutes as FGR couldn’t get any shots on goal. The Irish defense, outside of the tying goal were also able to thwart many attacks in the second half. As time expired on the clock, Chelsea was able to get two corner plays. During their chances to score the winning goal, some key defensive stick work for the Irish saved the tie and a well earned point in Conference play.
The Irish return home on Wednesday with another D2W Conference game against Brighton.
