OCT 16, 2019 (6:30pm) – PINCKNEY, MI

SUMMARY – The Irish (D2W Conference 2-4-1, Overall 7-10-1) ended up getting the 18th seed draw for the State Playoffs which meant every game was going to be on the road. The first game was on Wednesday evening at Pinckney (Overall 7-9-0) when the Irish faced off against the Division III Champions… who by virtue of their top D3 spot entered the Division II playoffs.

The Irish did not face the Pirates during the 2019 regular season but had yet to lose to the team in previous meetings. FGR was hoping that their winning streak versus Pinckney would continue on Wednesday… though Pinckney was hoping they could get their first win over the Irish in a game that was expected to be close.

Both teams came out with a lot of energy and tried to gain control of the game. Though each team was moving the ball quickly and making runs into the defensive ends of their opposition, neither team was able to capitalize. The first thirty minutes was relatively even in both play and control. When the break came, nothing had changed from the start as the game was still tied at 0-0.

In the second half, the Irish were finally able to put some steady pressure on the Pirate defense. Though it still took a while, FGR opened the scoring with fifteen minutes left when Monica Grayson (jr) collected a rebound off the goalie pads and pushed the ball over the goal line to give the Irish a 1-0 lead. Then three minutes later, FGR got a corner play opportunity that Olivia Barone (sr) fired past the Pinckney goalie to double the FGR lead. The Pirates didn’t give up… but instead scored on their only corner play of the night with nine minutes left in the game on a rocket-shot by Kailey Lambert to bring Pinckney within one goal. Though the Pirates gave it their all in the final minutes to get a tying goal, the Irish defense came through and FGR held onto the 2-1 win.

The Irish will now move onward to the Round-One Game of the MHSFHA Division II State Playoffs in a match against Mercy (Overall 9-4-4) on Friday at Mercy (4:30pm start). Mercy won the only meeting this season against the Irish by a 3-2 score in early September.
