SEP 12, 2020 (10:00pm) – ANN ARBOR
SUMMARY – The Irish (D2W Conference 0-0-0, Overall 0-2-0) hosted Mercy in a rematch of last year’s quarter-final teams which the Marlins triumphed in an overtime shoot-out.
FGR was playing its second game in two days… coming off a 0-1 loss to Regina. Meanwhile, Mercy had also played a game earlier in the week and tied Dearborn 2-2..
The first quarter was filled with action as both teams went up and down the field with their offenses. Each team got off 4 shots on goal but both goalkeepers were up to the task… stopping all attempts.
In the second quarter, the Irish were able to convert on an early corner when Maddie Korte (sr) fired a shot past directly past the Marlin goalie. FGR’s defense held strong for the remainder of the quarter and the Irish headed to halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Mercy evened the game with a score in just over a minute gone in the third quarter. FGR spent next thirteen minutes doing everything they could to keep the game tied as the Marlins’ offense began to spend a majority of time on the Irish side of play. Though FGR succeeded in holding off the Mercy attack, the game momentum had clearly switched.
In the final quarter, the Irish started to show the effects of two games in two days as the Marlins controlled possession and field of play. FGR was on the defensive and with just under six minutes to go in the game, Mercy was able to get the go ahead goal on a scramble in front of the Irish net. FGR had two final chances to tie the game on corners after time had expired but could not convert on either.
The Irish will begin conference play next week with a home matchup versus Chelsea.
