SEP 11, 2020 (4:30pm) – ANN ARBOR
SUMMARY – The Irish (D2W Conference 0-0-0, Overall 0-1-0) finally set foot on the field of Irish Stadium after the start of 2020 was delayed by nearly three weeks. The opener set up an early Catholic League matchup with Warren Regina.
FGR had won all prior meetings against Regina but the Saddielites were heading into the new season with high expectations given their experienced laden roster.
The Irish came out of the gate putting all sorts of pressure on the Regina defense. But, in a sign of how the day would go… the Irish came up empty on numerous chances. Later in the first quarter, Regina was able to get a corner play which resulted in the Saddielites grabbing a 1-0 lead on their first shot of the day.
In the second quarter, the teams settled a bit and neither allowed many opportunities for their opponent. Halfway thru the game, the score remained in Regina’s favor 1-0.
The third quarter was all Irish as the offense peppered the Regina goal with seven shots on goal. Unfortunately for FGR, Regina’s goalie was up to the task and she stopped every shot. No matter what thy did, nothing was breaking FGR’s way and heading into the final fifteen minutes, the Irish still were chasing the scoreboard.
In the final quarter, the Irish had several chances but they all slipped away without ever finding the net. Though dominating gameplay and outshooting Regina 10-3, when the scoreboard reached zeroes, the Saddielites had walked off the field with their first ever victory over FGR.
The next game for the Irish will be on Saturday against the team that knocked them out of the 2019 playoffs… Mercy.
